“One of the main things that motivates me is making a difference for others; it's why I made police work my career. Now, I’m able to do that without carrying the level of stress being a police chief carries.”
Retired Westbrook Police Chief, Janine Roberts, served 35 years in law enforcement. Her plan to retire in May of 2021 was moved up a few months, and now Janine can focus on her new business venture: Chief Cupcake's Consulting, LLC.
The business name hailed from a long-time nickname Janine gave herself when she was invited to play in a rugby league. She said, “I may present as a strong, confident, in-control person but my level of compassion is extremely hardy - one of the reasons I've been called a ‘cupcake’. It just made sense to me to use the nickname as part of my company's name. Besides, Chief Cupcake's Consulting has a catchy ring to it."
Janine was inspired by mentor and colleague, John Wipfler. She said John reached out to her a couple of years ago asking if she would be willing to train some employees on office and personal safety. That training was very well received by John's employees and gave Janine the idea of starting the company.
Janine has a strong and solid reputation acquired from her dedicated service in her career and lifestyle, and she wanted to leverage her experience, knowledge and relationships to help others saying, “I want to continue to make a difference in people's lives. And my consulting company seems to be a natural fit."
Her training program has focused on three categories, which Janine states can be adapted to anything we do in life: situational awareness, de-escalation skills and active threat response. The training, which can be modified to meet the client's needs on content and time, raises awareness about recognizing your surroundings and conscious thought of offensive or defensive actions you might take in an effort to increase safety and security.
Janine’s ability to make sure her actions back up her words, build trusting relationships and her determination to maintain an open mind and learn at every opportunity are no doubt key factors to her success. She looks forward to continuing making a difference for others and has added conflict resolution, difficult conversations, leadership, emergency preparedness, and facility security assessments to her programs.
