Having been an athlete for most of his life, Scott Descoteaux, Principal at Biddeford Middle School, was captivated by the many coaches in his life such as Brian Curit, Ron Cote and Mike Landry. Scott said these individuals instilled the value of relationships and caring about people: “You can accomplish so much more with quality relationships.” He also attributes his motivation and inspiration for teaching to his father.
Education has changed drastically this year. “Covid has turned everything upside down,” said Scott. “Our school system has been used to gradual changes in technology and protocols. When we had to make emergency action plans for the health and well being of our students and staff, we had to think quickly and wisely.” Earlier this year, when schools closed, educators were trying to keep their heads above water as they were planning just how they would navigate a new normal. Scott and his leadership team spent a lot of time reflecting on the emergency changes that happened in the Spring. To make a polished model for the Fall, they tirelessly prepared, planned, fact checked, collected information from parents and broke down everything granularly. “Like anything, our model can be better,” he said, “but it's working.”
As education continues to evolve, Scott reiterated “We’ve worked hard to be sure the educational needs are coupled with checking in on students' social and emotional health. None of this would work if it weren't for the teachers delivering and the kids making it happen - that’s where all of the credit goes. The teachers are so invested and care about what they do. It's been pretty exhausting for all of them, but I know every single one of them would say they’re doing whatever it takes for the students.”
Students have had to learn and follow new protocols put in place, in addition to learning and following new standard operating procedures and the new normal. Scott is hopeful that the current model will remain for the school year and that the students positivity and engagement will continue and grow.
