“No one wants to restock the nuts; but if we power through and keep our heads down we just might be able to.”
We’re both from out West, so that quote from Arrested Development rang true when challenges arose, the fear and anxiety spiked, and the thoughts of doubt surfaced. There’s so much we can’t control, so you just have to focus on what’s in front of you and make the best decisions you can.
We moved here because we felt it was time to try something new.
Initially we were going to create an Inn at an old farm and farmhouse in New Hampshire. That quickly became too much for us to take on, so we decided to start the Elda 1.0 version on Main Street.
We had no real attachment to Biddeford or the surrounding area, but we found a vacant restaurant space where we could just move in and open. We wanted to give it a shot because Biddeford was, and is, growing more interested in food. We got going, but we were having a bit of an identity crisis and we were quickly outgrowing the space, so we took a leap of faith to start a new venture.
It wasn’t a sure bet, it still isn’t, but when we talked with the mills and we explored available spaces, we embarked on our current project. It took us the whole of 2020 to work on construction, and there were points where we weren’t sure if we should go through. We knew we invested so much heart and soul into it that we couldn’t turn our back on it. We needed to see it through and open the cafe and restaurant.
Jackrabbit Café downstairs and Elda upstairs render a yin and yang. The café is open in the daytime, offering a casual vibe and Scandinavian inspired pastries, breakfast and lunch, while the restaurant is open at night offering a seasonally inspired set menu and upscale dining. Having the dual concepts allowed us to have our foot in both doors and appeal to more people without changing what it was we wanted to do.
We’re proud of what we’ve accomplished and we’re excited to confidently proceed and share what we’ve been up to. We hope this summer you’ll enter our little black door on Main Street so you can enjoy an experience with us.
