Growing up, my maternal grandmother Ruth lived on Martha's Vineyard. All of the family lived on the mainland. Before the internet, if you can remember that, she wrote to us. She had beautiful penmanship, and I remember how special it was to receive one of her newsy letters. She loved receiving them as well.
During the recent pandemic, many seniors felt isolated from their family and friends, just like my grandmother, when we returned to the mainland. I fondly remembered connecting with my grandmother through her letters. I knew we could change how seniors were feeling by sending them a simple, uplifting note.
It was a tangible gift the seniors could keep, and it generated so much happiness and hope. It lifted their spirits, and it was an opportunity for those in the community who felt helpless to do something meaningful and make a difference--a win for both sides.
Right now, we're in the process of connecting senior living communities by initiating a letter exchange program. After the exchange, the recipient's photo would be shared with the sender to show them the happiness generated by their effort.
This community outreach idea has been so well received and surpassed every expectation; we're going to continue something similar through the Spring to spread the love! 250 letters have been collected and delivered so far. This idea came to me, and it's been overwhelming how positive it's been received and the difference it's making. I hope other people will see its value and continue to help it grow in their own communities.
The best part about this initiative is you don't have to go through us; you can send a letter to anyone you know who could use a smile. If you'd like to connect with us, visit our website www.coastalcare-solutions.com or email us at coastalcaresolutions at gmail dot com
