The best gift you can give is to someone you’ll never meet.
When I was working for Rite Aid, we’d started asking for donations to the Children’s Miracle Network. After a few years, I thought that I could do more on my own. In 2012, with the right connections, I got my start.
The first event I set up a table at was the Cornish Apple Festival. I worked on gift baskets and flower arrangements to sell at my table with 100% of the proceeds to benefit the Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital. From my experience, I found that if people could get something for their donation, they were more likely to donate.
I never thought I’d raise as much as I did, and it’s so fulfilling to be able to contribute 100% of the profits to such an impactful organization. I’ve met more and more people and have become friends with so many incredible families in our communities. I’ve heard their stories which are equally heartbreaking and heartwarming, like the young man who would’ve lost his daughter if he waited an hour longer to bring her in. Hearing those stories make me want to continue doing this for as long as I’m able because I know what I'm doing is benefitting people I may never meet.
I do it because I can. There isn’t any one particular thing that pushed me to, everything just kind of happened. I’ve heard family and friends say, “people participate and contribute because of you, Mel,” but I don’t want the recognition. I do this because I love it. I could never do what staff at the hospital does so for me, this is the way I can give back and honor them.
