Denise Alphonse is celebrating her 5‑year work anniversary at Saco & Biddeford Savings in May!
Denise’s path to SBSI was shaped by major career and life changes, and a realization that it was time to find more balance. After spending 27 years working 60‑plus hours a week at a big‑box retailer, Denise knew she was ready for something different.
She transitioned to a role at a jewelry store, which offered fewer hours but came with more responsibility than she wanted at that stage in her life.
One day, while driving past the Old Orchard Beach branch, Denise decided to take a chance and apply. That single decision led to an interview, a job offer and ultimately a workplace that would redefine what work–life balance looked like for her.
“It was a two‑step progression getting here,” Denise says, “but it showed me there’s more to life than just going to work, coming home, and repeating the cycle. I should have done this years ago.”
Denise joined SBSI as a Customer Relationship Associate and spent several years on the teller line learning the fundamentals of banking — an entirely new field for her. As opportunities arose and colleagues moved into new roles, Denise stepped up, trained, and continued to grow her skill set.
Through hands‑on experience and exposure to officer responsibilities, she realized she was ready to take the next step. About a year and a half ago, Denise was promoted to Customer Relationship Officer, a role she takes great pride in today.
What makes SBSI special for Denise is the environment. “This is the first job — and it’s sad it came so late in my life — where I genuinely enjoy coming to work every day,” she shares.
While no job is without challenges, Denise says there’s never been a day she’s dreaded walking through the door. The culture, support, and sense of family have made a lasting impact.
“My coworkers are like a second family, and I truly enjoy helping customers make the most of their finances so they can live a better life.”
Outside of work, Denise enjoys spending time with her husband and grandson. Her favorite activities include four‑wheeling through mud and rocky mountain trails, cooking, gardening and relaxing by the pool.
