Sugar Mama’s had been around for a few years before opening the storefront. Sarah Getchius was specializing in baking for events, wedding parties, sweet 16’s; and all custom order baking. She had two knee surgeries and had to figure out how to make money at home.
When Sarah was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, it was recommended she change her diet to be plant based and she became very passionate about it. She realized that vegetarian and vegan options were limited in this area, so she moved from the Old Port to Old Orchard Beach. Sarah and her business partner Haley Bresnahan soon opened the storefront of Sugar Mama’s on Saco Main Street, and they said in unison, “We knew we’d be busy, but it’s way more busy than anticipated. Which is a good thing!”
Sugar Mama’s runs a scratch kitchen and is always trying new recipes. The juices, smoothies and food are made in-house, fresh daily. Their selection of menu items varies based on seasonal and local availability of certain produce. Whenever possible, they source organic and local.
Both ladies are people-people and they are truly passionate and love what they do. Sarah says, “We are different age demographics, but we both know a lot of people. It’s very rare someone comes in one of us doesn’t know.” Haley continued to say, “It’s been a really incredible journey. We are so supportive of each other which helps keep our passion alive; we keep each other going. We have similar strengths and neither of us are afraid to take the lead. We give each other that little ‘oomf’ when we need it.”
Sarah and Haley are looking forward to continuing serving the community and are so happy with all the feedback they’ve received so far. “We’ve felt so much love and support,” they said. The next big thing is the approaching holiday season where they hope to host holiday parties and bake up sweets that all families will want as part of their holiday spread.
Fresh, healthy, beautiful food is their "Maine" goal, so be sure to stop over and welcome them to Saco!
