Home. Connection. Appreciation.
We thought about moving to Texas, and on the way to the airport, we confessed that Maine is where we wanted to stay. From that moment forward, I had a renewed appreciation for our beautiful state and decided to live like a tourist and appreciate our home for what it is.
I was looking for something tangible, a small symbol of Maine I could wear with pride as a constant reminder. When I couldn’t find what I was looking for, I decided to use my background in art to make my vision come to life.
In college, I majored in sculpture and I primarily worked with metal. I was passionate about the foundry and the process of mold making. I took a few continuing study classes at Maine College of Art and learned the art and craft of jewelry smithing. I did some mold making so I could create the smallest silhouette possible of Maine possible while still allowing a chain to fit through to make a necklace.
When I had a finished product, I was so happy with it. I made necklaces for all of my friends, then I put the necklace on Etsy and slowly started getting into the retail space. Now, my jewelry is in 50 family owned businesses up the coast of Maine. This small piece of jewelry creates such a sense of connection to home for so many people who wear or gift it. Sharing that with others is what makes this so intimate and special.
When I completed school, I went into education because that seemed like the right career path for me. Low and behold, it certainly was. I’m able to teach art lessons and classes to both children and adults, while continuing to make jewelry. I’m proud that I can show my own children that they can be successful and do what they love simultaneously.
I feel privileged and lucky to have the opportunity to follow my dream. There’s been some short term pain, doubt and uncertainty along the way, but through loss and heartbreak, I was able to find gratitude.
It hasn’t always been easy, but I’m grateful, because it’s been worth it.
