I’ve been involved in the substance misuse prevention world for a long time and worked for many years as a Certified Prevention Specialist. I am semi-retired, but I’ve continued pursuing interest in this field of work by joining the Biddeford-Saco Rotary Club and the Red Ribbon Committee. I also serve on the Rotary District’s Recovery Initiative Committee.
The people who are involved in this club are so passionate about what they do and they are incredibly supportive of one another in a big way. We want to promote the message of healthy lifestyles, and the Red Ribbon Committee focuses on preventative measures and recovery efforts to address substance misuse.
Adverse childhood experiences can have a tremendous impact on lifelong health and opportunity, and having early conversations with kids can help mitigate future risk. The earlier you intervene, the better a shot you have at getting them the help they may need in the future. The same holds true for misuse of drugs and alcohol.
Children need positive role models. Studies have shown that a significant person in a child's life can help influence their actions and motivate them to uncover true potentials and overcome tribulations. Education is also a huge factor.
Partnerships are key to our success, and we wouldn’t be as successful without the people in our communities who come together to support our cause. There is a light at the end of the tunnel, but there’s still so much work to be done.
