“I tried to qualify in the Maine Amateur many times and didn’t make it.”
Please join us in congratulating Wayne Johnson, SBSI Loan Officer and member of Val Halla Golf Course, who competed in the Maine Senior Amateur Championship placing fourth out of 114, scoring 8 over.
“For the past two years, our family has been growing and I hadn’t played in a ton of tournaments. This season, I’ve played in as many tournaments as I could to get some practice in. I was looking forward to playing in the Maine Senior Amateur because I didn’t have to qualify, I just needed to be over 55.
I made my share of mistakes in the tournament, but I was able to limit them enough to place 4th. I played well and the course set-up really nicely for me.
It’s been a long time since I’ve had that much fun on the golf course. I saw many faces I hadn’t seen in a while, and I’m so happy that Mike O’Brien won. We were members at Sable Oaks years ago, and he's been a successful amateur golfer so it was incredible to be on the course to see him win this individual championship.
Growing up, I was a multi-sport athlete which continued through college. Golf was a hobby and although I’ve always been competitive in team sports, golf was different. It’s a funny game. You can play great one day and not the next.
During the MSGA Senior Amateur, I was fortunate to make my way around the course and do pretty well. I qualified to play in the MSGA Senior Match Play on September 21-22. I’m nervous, but if I limit mistakes and take advantage of opportunities, who knows what will happen.”
