Bonnie Patterson-Ducharme, teller at our Old Orchard Beach Branch, is celebrating 20 years at SBSI this month!
We recently asked Bonnie to reflect on her journey, from how she first joined the bank to the many experiences, relationships, and memorable moments she’s gained along the way.
Her story highlights not only her personal growth across branches and roles, but also the strong sense of community, support, and connection that makes SBSI such a special place to work.
What brought you to SBSI?
I was a cashier at a local butcher shop/grocery store when Lynne Belanger (now retired) came to my register. We had a pleasant conversation and she suggested that I apply for the teller position in Saco.
I am so very grateful to Lynne for encouraging me to step out of my comfort zone because she saw something in me that I was blind to. It was the best decision I ever made!
How have you moved or advanced between departments/branches?
I began my journey as a teller in the Saco branch. I helped out as a receptionist with Pat Reny while recovering from an injury (boy did Pat and I have fun!).
I helped out at the Ops Center in customer care while I recovered from foot surgery. What a wonderful opportunity and a fabulous crew. I took care of the mail like nobody’s business — so much fun!
I was a teller in the Saco branch for 17 years until I was sent to the OOB branch while Saco went through a major remodel. Another wonderful opportunity. I grew up in OOB, so it was like going home. I reconnected with old schoolmates and with my hometown.
The move was such a good fit that I decided to stay. I dearly miss my Saco branch family and the many customers with whom I developed fond relationships.
Now I am getting to know our OOB family and community and have the good fortune to form new relationships with our valued customers and my OOB crew.
Why do you enjoy working at SBSI?
At SBSI, you are not just an employee — you are part of a big family. There have been some very difficult times during my 20 years, and my SBSI family has been there to lift me up and help me through.
The kindness, compassion, and generosity given me during those difficult times — well, the depth of my gratitude is difficult to express. Those times, the thoughtfulness, the hugs — all things that family does for each other.
I have been blessed to hold so many fond memories, beautiful and meaningful friendships in my heart. I have worked with some amazing folks. Each person has helped me grow and learn new things, and I am forever grateful.
Did I mention how much fun I have experienced with my SBSI family? Oh my goodness — so much laughter, so many gatherings, BBQs, Christmas parties, parades, and volunteer opportunities. Great fun!
How do you enjoy spending your free time?
I treasure spending time with our grandchildren, children, family, and friends. I try to get to the beach as often as I can — it’s my happy place. I appreciate nature, even in my own backyard.
I enjoy riding our motorcycles with my husband, my son, and our Masonic brothers. I love to travel and explore new places, different cultures, and countries.
