On April 3, members of the SBSI team spent the day volunteering with Junior Achievement as part of a JA in a Day program at Blue Point Primary School in Scarborough, and it served as a meaningful reminder of the impact early learning experiences can have.
Working with first‑grade classrooms, our team explored how families, neighbors, and local businesses all connect to form a community. Through hands‑on activities and guided discussion, students created their own neighborhood maps and shared their dream jobs, offering thoughtful insights and plenty of creativity along the way.
For several SBSI volunteers, it was their first time participating in a Junior Achievement program. As Chelsea Miller shared, “It was my first time volunteering with Junior Achievement, and I’m grateful to the teachers and fellow volunteers for being so supportive.” That welcoming environment made it easy to jump in, connect with students, and fully engage in the experience.
Chelsea also noted how memorable the day was thanks to the students themselves. “The kids were amazing and kept us laughing. They truly made the day,” she said, reflecting on the energy, curiosity, and humor students brought into every classroom.
Experiences like JA in a Day align closely with SBSI’s commitment to financial literacy, education, and community involvement. By helping young learners understand how communities function and how they can play a role within them, we are investing not just in today’s students but in the future of the communities we serve.
Thank you to Junior Achievement, the teachers at Blue Point Primary School, and our SBSI volunteers Chelsea Miller, Kathleen Grenier, Julie Mardas, Joe Reardon, and Laura Crowell for making the day such a meaningful and memorable one.
