When a devastating three alarm fire swept through Portland’s Custom House Wharf on Dec. 26, 2025, longtime SBSI spokesperson and Maine musician Don Campbell was moved to action.
“When I saw the fire burning, I knew I had to do something,” says Campbell. “I’ve gotten to know many of the hard-working men and women around Portland’s beautiful waterfront, having performed music at many establishments there over the last 30 years.”
Campbell began organizing a benefit concert — an effort that quickly grew into a full-scale community effort as musicians across Maine volunteered their talent to help those affected.
The fire caused significant damage to gear, traps and boats belonging to local fishermen, many of whom rely on the Wharf for their livelihoods. In the wake of the tragedy, the Maine Coast Fishermen’s Association (MCFA) launched a rapid response fund to provide immediate assistance. Campbell’s concert became one of the most visible and heartfelt efforts supporting that work.
“Our working waterfront has been home for many generations of fishing families,” says Campbell. “The fresh fish that gets unloaded at Custom House Wharf gets served locally and shipped internationally to diners who appreciate these harvested delicacies. Preserving it all for future generations is very important.”
Held at Aura in Portland on January 17, the concert lineup reflected the state’s vibrant music community, with styles ranging from folk to rock to country. A surprise set by fan favorite country group 12/OC added even more excitement to the sold out crowd.
The event raised $11,000 from ticket sales alone, contributing to the nearly $200,000 gathered so far for relief efforts.
The benefit concert was more than an evening of great music — it was a reminder of Maine’s resilience and its tradition of neighbors helping neighbors. SBSI is proud to recognize Don Campbell not just as a spokesperson, but as a leader who embodies the spirit of compassion and service that defines our communities.
