SBSI Leads Large‑Scale E‑Waste Disposal Initiative

As technology evolves, organizations naturally refresh equipment over time — and with that comes the responsibility to properly manage outdated hardware.

At Saco & Biddeford Savings, years of previous technology upgrades resulted in a large volume of unused electronic equipment being stored in basement and backroom areas within the Operations Center. While largely out of sight, this accumulation raised important considerations around space, sustainability, and secure disposal.

Recognizing the need to address electronic waste responsibly, SBSI’s IT team spearheaded a large‑scale e‑waste clean‑out aimed at safely removing outdated equipment while ensuring both environmental and data‑security best practices were followed. E‑waste is more than just old technology — it can also contain sensitive information that requires certified data destruction and careful handling.

To support this effort, SBSI partnered with Give IT Get IT (giveitgetit.org), a nonprofit organization specializing in certified e‑waste recycling with a strong focus on data security, service quality, and reuse for community benefit.

SBSI chose Give IT Get IT because of their alternative approach to recycling — one that looks beyond scrap value and instead prioritizes responsible recovery, secure data destruction, and extending the life of technology in meaningful ways.

Through their certified program, Give IT Get IT ensures equipment is properly evaluated, data is securely destroyed, and usable technology is repurposed to help build access to technology and support workforce development within the community. This mission‑driven model closely aligns with SBSI’s own values around community investment and responsible stewardship.

Once the project was underway, Give IT Get IT arrived on site with a full box truck, wooden transport containers, and pallets to support the removal process. SBSI’s Facilities team worked alongside our IT team and Operations staff to safely move equipment out of the basement and backroom areas and load it for transport.

The scope of the clean‑out was substantial — including several hundred outdated computers, approximately 50 printers, and additional electronic equipment that had filled storage areas over time. Prior to removal, some rooms were nearly unusable due to the volume of stored equipment. Following the clean‑out, the space was fully reclaimed, allowing teams to more easily access remaining items and evaluate future phases of disposal.

After collection, Give IT Get IT began sorting and processing the equipment, completing certified data destruction where required and providing documentation and reporting to support audit and compliance requirements. This ensured that all materials were handled securely, responsibly, and in accordance with industry standards.

Thanks to this coordinated effort, SBSI has recovered valuable operational space, reduced environmental impact, and reinforced its commitment to responsible business practices.

Partnerships like this demonstrate how behind‑the‑scenes work can make a meaningful difference — not only within the organization, but across the broader community.

We would like to extend a sincere thank you to our Facilities and IT teams and to Give IT Get IT for their leadership, expertise, and shared commitment to making a positive impact.
