Community Gathers for Kids Safety Day in Westbrook

The parking lots of Hannaford and our Westbrook branch location came alive on Saturday, August 16, when it was transformed into a vibrant scene of flashing lights, laughter, and learning for this year’s Kids Safety Day.

By midmorning, the smell of grilled hot dogs drifted across the pavement as children in bike helmets gathered eagerly around fire trucks and police cruisers, their eyes wide with wonder. A soft mechanical hum came from the nearby smokehouse trailer, one of the day’s most memorable attractions. Inside, kids practiced crawling low under simulated smoke, guided by firefighters teaching life-saving escape techniques.

Not far off, the Bicycle Coalition of Maine ran a colorful bicycle rodeo, where young riders steered through cones, signaled turns, and picked up practical riding skills. The Michael T. Goulet Traumatic Brain Injury and Epilepsy Foundation gave away free multisport helmets, each one fitted carefully and checked for safety. Parents asked thoughtful questions while kids grinned, helmets snug and secure, already taking pride in their new gear.

Throughout the day, members of the Westbrook Police and Fire Departments stood side by side with local organizations handing out resources and sharing conversations and connections. Together, they created a space that felt less like an event and more like a neighborhood gathering with purpose.

In the end, Kids Safety Day continues to serve as a powerful reminder that strength, care, and resilience runs deep in Westbrook. This day built on connection and community spirit has proven once again that safety doesn’t just come from sirens and gear—it starts with people looking out for each other.
