Stan DeFreese, CEO and co-founder of DeFco Networks, has been working in the tech industry for over 30 years. Through it all, he says his journey has been shaped by curiosity, perseverance and a desire to make a difference.
Originally aiming to be a pilot, Stan’s career took an unexpected turn after graduation, leading him to work at Bath Iron Works. During late-night shifts, he discovered a passion for technology, which led him to a computer class at Southern Maine Community College and set the stage for his future.
His deep dive into the tech world soon evolved into hands-on experience. After working with the local school district to put libraries online in the 90s, Stan went on to work with major companies, including Xylan, Alcatel and Cisco, where he was part of a team that helped shape the early days of network systems. By the time the internet became ubiquitous, he was already ahead of the curve.
One of his proudest moments was his involvement in pioneering telemedicine technology in 2008, far before it became a mainstream tool during the pandemic. Working with Catholic Health East and Massachusetts General, Stan developed a portable monitor with a camera, enabling doctors to provide remote consultations for critical patients. This technology was revolutionary at the time and saved countless lives.
Stan’s contributions in the healthcare space didn’t stop there. He was also instrumental in designing the network systems for Federal Government like the US Army Research Laboratory, DEA, Local Governet Washington Transit Authority, Queensland Railroad and Portland JetPort, and Business' like' Unisys, Walmart, Delta Airlines, and Bay Ferries.
From transforming hospital networks for greater efficiency to pioneering telemedicine long before it became mainstream, Stan has been a driving force in advancing technology for the greater good. His forward-thinking innovations have helped streamline critical systems, set the stage for the future of digital health and changed the lives of so many people for the better.
