Jonesy's Journey: Small Victories

Mark Jones By Mark Jones

“Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things.” - Robert Brault

While walking the Marginal Way in Ogunquit with my longtime friend, Glenn Dumont, he shared a conversation that I really appreciated.

A young friend, training for his first triathlon, had asked Glenn what one piece of advice he would offer after a distinguished Air Force career and now serving in an executive leadership role with Stryker.

Glenn gladly shared.

"If I could give my younger self one piece of advice, it would be this: Learn to celebrate the small victories."

He continued...

"For too many years I focused almost entirely on celebrating the big goal achievements of my friends and family as well as my own. When I finally personally reached one, my attention immediately shifted to the next. I rarely paused to appreciate all the small accomplishments that made the achievement possible ... and sometimes I didn't even celebrate the big one before moving on."

Pretty good advice for anyone at any age.

So much of life isn't lived in the milestones. It's lived in the quiet moments ... and in recognizing the small victories ... the early mornings, the extra effort, the encouraging conversation, the small act of kindness, the workout you almost skipped, the project that moved forward just a little today.

Those aren't interruptions to the journey.

They really are the journey.

Maybe today is a good day to slow down and start pausing to celebrate the small victories that come about ... your own and those of someone else. They deserve to be noticed.

This morning's photo was taken at sunrise along Ogunquit's beautiful Marginal Way.
