SBSI Employee on Volunteering at Therapeutic Riding Center

"Riding to the Top is a nonprofit organization based in Windham, Maine. Since its establishment in 1993, it has been dedicated to improving the health and wellbeing of children and adults with disabilities through equine services on its 50-acre farm.

I was drawn to volunteer at Riding to the Top because I have a passion for working with horses and individuals with disabilities. It brings me immense joy to enrich their lives and contribute positively to their mental health.

I’ve loved horses all of my life and have been riding since I was 6 years old.

Prior to joining the banking industry I worked with children, which further fueled my desire to combine both my passions and make a difference in the community by assisting people with disabilities.

Witnessing the transformation of individuals through equine assistance services and therapy has been remarkable. Seeing someone progress from using a wheelchair to walking with a walker after months of therapy is truly incredible.

The bond between horses and clients, and witnessing their newfound confidence and abilities, never fails to bring me an immense amount of happiness.

As an enthusiastic volunteer, I seize every opportunity to contribute. Despite working two jobs, I utilize my days off from the bank to volunteer. I even dedicate my vacations to giving back to the community. Being at the barn, supporting fellow volunteers and building connections has become a regular part of my life.

The relationships formed through volunteering are meaningful and enduring. Familiar faces, both among the volunteers and clients, return time and time again, fostering bonds not only with people but also with the horses. It’s just a really amazing experience that I am so grateful I get to be a part of."
